CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral Therapy: Gentle Healing for Body and Mind

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. It was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger after years of clinical testing and research at Michigan State University.

How Does it Work?

CST is based on the idea that the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, has subtle, rhythmic movements of cerebrospinal fluid. Practitioners use a light touch to detect restrictions in the movement of the craniosacral system and work gently to release them.

Craniosacral Therapy for Pediatrics

Craniosacral therapy (CST) can be particularly beneficial for infants and children. Its gentle nature makes it an excellent option for addressing various pediatric concerns.

Benefits for Infants and Children

CST may help with:

  • Colic and excessive crying
  • Feeding difficulties and latching issues
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Ear infections
  • Torticollis (wry neck)
  • Developmental delays
  • Sensory processing disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

How CST Works for Children

In infants and young children, the craniosacral system is still developing. Gentle manipulations can help optimize this development, potentially preventing future issues. CST can be especially helpful for babies who experienced a difficult birth, as it may help release tensions and restrictions caused by the birthing process.

What to Expect in a Pediatric CST Session

Pediatric CST sessions are typically shorter than adult sessions, usually lasting about 30-45 minutes. The therapist will use an extremely gentle touch, often described as being as light as the weight of a nickel.

For infants, the session might involve the therapist cradling the baby or working with the baby lying on a treatment table. Older children might lie on the table or engage in quiet play during the session.

Parents are always welcome and encouraged to stay with their child during the treatment. The therapist will explain what they’re doing and answer any questions you might have.

How Craniosacral Therapy Helps with TMJ/D

Craniosacral therapy can be an effective treatment for TMJ disorders by:

  • Releasing restrictions in the jaw and surrounding tissues
  • Improving overall cranial rhythm and fluid dynamics
  • Reducing tension in the fascia and muscles associated with the TMJ
  • Promoting relaxation and stress relief, which can indirectly alleviate TMJ symptoms
  • Enhancing the body’s natural healing processes

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy for TMJ/D:

  • Pain relief in jaw, face, and head
  • Improved jaw mobility and function
  • Reduced clicking or popping sounds
  • Decreased headaches and migraines
  • Better sleep and overall well-being
  • Non-invasive alternative to more aggressive treatments
  • Potential reduction in teeth grinding and clenching

Integration with Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Craniosacral therapy can be used as a complementary treatment alongside traditional orofacial myofunctional therapy. The relaxation and alignment promoted by CST may enhance the effectiveness of exercises and techniques used in OMT.
