What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a light touch therapy that works with the body to help release tension and strains with the body and improve overall functioning. Within the body is a natural rhythm or pulse within our brain and our spinal cord. When there are restrictions within the body, this cause stress on our central nervous system. By releasing these restrictions within the body, the natural rhythm is improved, thus often reducing physical as well as emotional dysfunction.
How does it work?
Every day our body experiences stress and strains. These stresses come at us both physically and emotionally, leaving an imprint on the body within the fascia system
The fascial system is a complex webbing that connects to every nerve, bone, muscle, and organ with the body. Trauma, both from the seemingly insignificant bump against the wall to the more impactful car accident, leave an impression on our fascia and nervous system.
CST works to help release these restrictions within the fascial system, improving the function of the central nervous system, thus restoring the natural balance within the body.
What should I expect in a session?
Each session is unique based on your body’s needs that day. Initial sessions begin with an evaluation, including discussing your current concerns, as well as a hands-on assessment to evaluate how the body is functioning.
You will lay on a massage table with blankets and pillows for support and comfort. It is important to communicate with your provider to ensure you are comfortable so that you can completely relax during your treatment. You are completely clothed for your session.
Light pressure is applied, usually starting at the feet, to assess your body and feel for any restrictions. Following the assessment, light pressure will be applied to various points on the body to assist with removing restrictions and improving the overall function of the body.
You are welcome to talk during your session, however, many people find their treatment to be very relaxing and go into a deep meditative state, while others fall into a restorative sleep.
What should I expect after a session?
Each person will have their own experience following a session. Some people may not notice any significant changes initially. Some people may find that they more tired following a session. While others may notice other shifts. The most commonly reported benefits include:
- Overall relaxation
- Improved mental functioning
- Improved sleep
- Decreased pain
Please make sure to communicate with your provider on any questions or concerns you may have following your session.
It is recommended that you drink plenty of water following a session to assist the body with the natural detoxification of any built up toxins in the body.
It is also recommended initially to restrain from any strenuous or stressful activities immediately following a treatment to allow for the body to integrate the treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
Each person will respond differently to the sessions based on additional exercises that are completed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan with O’Brien Wellness. Your provider will explain all recommendations during your initial evaluation session.
