We talk about stress a lot over here at O’Brien Wellness, so I thought it would a good time to really start focusing on tools to not only manage stress but even start to prevent it.
Essential oils and aromatherapy have gained some major popularity in the past few years thanks to MLM companies. I encourage you to conduct your own research on companies prior to using any essential oils. The purity of the oil is essential for safety.
But back to this whole “code lavender”. As I was searching for some research, I came across an article titled: Code Lavender: Cultivating Intentional Acts of Kindness in Response to Stressful Work Situations (Davidson et. al. 2017). The gist of the research is that when individuals were in a stressful work situation and provided with a “Code Lavender kit” with affirmations, chocolate, and lavender oil to inhale, they found the resources to be helpful and would recommend the kits to others.
Another study Effects of aromatherapy on sleep quality and anxiety of patients (Karadag et. al. 2017) looked at the inhalation of lavender essential oils on patients that were in an ICU. There were statistically significant differences between those that inhaled the lavender versus those that were provided with a placebo. READ: Improved sleep even in the hospital!!!
One more study Effect of Inhalation of Lavender Essential Oil on Vital Signs in Open Heart Surgery ICU ( Salamati A et.al. 2017) researched the effects of patients inhaling lavender essential oil while undergoing open heart surgery. The researched observed a significant decrease in vital signs including heart rate and blood pressure!
While the above-mentioned research articles are more directed at patients and staff within the hospital setting, we can extrapolate from these stressful environments the efficacy of lavender oil to assist with decreasing stress symptoms. These studies all looked at the inhalation of the essential oil, but similar results can be observed using a diffuser.
So next time you are feeling stress start to sneak up on you, reach for that bottle of lavender and take a whiff and see if it works for you.
